Interviewing Tips:

Preparation is the most crucial step in the interview process; this could be your only chance to impress the potential employer. Below are some helpful guidelines to ensure a productive interview.

Know Who, When and Where

Know the exact location, directions, interview time and the names of everybody you will be meeting. Bring extra copies of your resume in a portfolio folder with a notepad and pen. Have references available on a separate page. Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes before the scheduled time.

Research the Company

The internet allows us to have valuable information at our fingertips, take advantage of it. Go to the company's homepage to find out company information such as annual revenues, lines of business, and recent press releases.

Dress Professionally

First impressions are very important and your appearance is the first impression the interviewer will have of you. Make sure your appearance is neat, kept and professional. Avoid colognes or trendy attire. Wear a simple, traditional suit, even if you know the company has a casual dress code.

Know Yourself

Outline what you have to offer a company before going to the interview. Make a list of your strengths and transferable skills. Be prepared to share examples of how you added value to previous companies and positions.

Know Your Weaknesses/Experience Gaps

Perform a self-analysis like a SWOT analysis. Think about what your weaknesses might be in relation to the job you are interviewing for. Never volunteer a "deal killer" weakness. Technical or background experience weaknesses are usually deemed repairable. Be much more careful when describing weaknesses of a personal sort, as the interviewer may see these as issues that the company cannot help you with at this time. Do not get into any protracted discussion about a weakness.

Listen and Learn

Be attentive to the interviewer. Careful listening will show your interest in the company and position, as well as your ability to focus. Prepare at least five questions about the company, industry, desired qualities to succeed and challenges that need to be overcome.

As They Say, 'Practice Makes Perfect'

Write a script for your responses to standard interview questions. Practice and role-play with another person. Thoughtful preparation to difficult interview questions will alleviate anxiety and embarrassing pauses in the interview. Practice a response to address any weaknesses. Offers and Closing Points
